ABSTRACT: In the Southeast Region, southern parts of Central-West and northern parts of South Regions, Stagnations of Warm and Dry Air Masses (EMAQS) occur between April and September months. They are characterized by positive temperature anomalies and negative precipitation anomalies, persisting for several days. This situation causes an increase in air pollution and in the forest fire and bushfire risks. Specific studies about this topic are important, since few publications have been produced so far. During the EMAQS, the cold fronts, coming from Argentina, are prevented from reaching Southeast Region of Brazil, staying over the South Region of the country. An EMAQS event has three distinct stages: formation stage, when the air temperature increases; maintenance stage, when the temperature does not change significantly; and dissipation stage, when the temperature decreases to normal values of the month. Here, the statistical, synoptic and thermodynamic aspects of the events are studied. In the period between the years of 1985 and 2003, 35 EMAQS events are identified, which correspond to an average of approximately 2 cases per year. The duration of the EMAQS varies between 7 and 23 days and the mean duration is 11 days. The frequency of EMAQS is higher between June and September months and the most intense cases, according to I(EMAQS) index developed here, occur in August and September. The interannual variability of EMAQS is found to be unrelated to the El Niño - South Oscillation phase. On the other hand, 63% of all the EMAQS cases and 100% of the intense cases are associated with blocking periods over the Southeast Pacific Ocean. The synoptic study included two cases of EMAQS, the first occurring between 01 and 15 June 2002 and the second occurring between 07 and 29 July 1987. In both cases, the Subtropical South Atlantic High drifts westward to affect the continent and the lower tropospheric flow presents strong northerly winds, from the Amazon region to the South Region of Brazil. At midlevels, there is strong evidence for the relation between the atmospheric blocking episode in the Southeast Pacific Ocean and the EMAQS over central Brazil. At high levels, the NW-SE jet configuration over South America does not favor the advance of cold fronts to Southeast Region of Brazil. The terms in the Thermodynamic Energy Equation (EET), are computed for the three stages of EMAQS lifecycle to investigate the causes of the low-level air temperature changes. In the first case (01 to 15 June 2002), the Adiabatic Heating (AA) and the Horizontal Temperature Advection (AHT) contributed for the formation and dissipation of the EMAQS. However, in the second case (07 to 29 July 1987), where the temperature change are stronger, the AHT is found to be the most important term for the development and dissipation of the EMAQS.
