| Abstract | Este trabalho teve por objetivo aprimorar o entendimento da relação entre modos de variabilidade dos Oceanos tropicais Pacífico e Atlântico com as precipitações do Norte do Nordeste Brasileiro (NNEB). Para tanto, inicialmente foram apresentados alguns conceitos básicos sobre os modos de variabilidade: El Niño/Oscilação Sul (ENOS), Oscilação Decadal do Pacífico (ODP) e variabilidade de temperatura da superfície do mar (TSM) do Atlântico tropical (AT). Foram utilizados dados mensais de TSM, pressão ao nível do mar (PNM), e de precipitação em Fortaleza (representativa do NNEB). O período base para a análise foi de 1910 a 2000, época em que as fases da ODP estiveram bem definidas. A técnica de quantis foi usada para classificar os anos em chuvosos, secos e normais, e os anos de El Niño, La Niña e neutros foram identificados pelo índice Niño-3 de anomalias de TSM (ATSM). Por meio de análise de compostos os padrões anômalos de TSM e PNM, associados a extremos climáticos no NNEB foram identificados. Com a realização deste trabalho foi possível identificar padrões distintos de ATSM nas duas fases da ODP. Notou-se que esta interfere não somente no desenvolvimento dos episódios extremos do ENOS, mas também na sua intensidade. Em alguns casos pode-se notar que ENOS e a variabilidade de TSM do AT agiram no mesmo sentido, acentuando as anomalias de precipitação no NNEB, enquanto que em outros eles agiram em sentidos opostos atenuando ou até invertendo o sinal das anomalias de precipitação na região em questão. Assim, pode se concluir que para um bom monitoramento climático do NNEB é preciso levar em consideração a variabilidade dos Oceanos Pacífico equatorial leste e AT. ABSTRACT: The main objective of this stud y was to improve the understanding of the relationship between variability modes in the tropical Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and the precipitation over Northern Northeast Brazil (NNEB). Initially, the basic concepts on the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) modes and on the sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the tropical Atlantic (TA) were presented. Monthly data of SST, sea level pressure (SLP) and precipitation in Fortaleza (representative of the NNEB) were used. The base period of analysis was from 1910 to 2000, a period when both phases of the PDO were well-defined. While, the quantiles technique was used to classify wet, dry and normal years, El Niño, La Niña and neutral years were identified using the Niño-3 index for the SST anomalies (SSTA). Using composites, the anomaly patterns of the SST and SLP related to climate extremes in the NNEB were identified. In this work, distinct SSTA patterns were identified for the two phases of the PDO. It was no ted that the PDO influences not only the development of the ENSO extremes but also their intensities. For some cases, the ENSO and the SST variability in the TA act in the same direction, in such a way that the precipitation anomalies in the NNEB are reinforced. For other cases, they act in opposite directions, in such a way that the precipitation signs in the NNEB are weakened even reversed. Hence, for an efficient climate monitoring of the NNEB, the SST variability in the eastern equatorial Pacific and in the TA should be taken into account. |
