ABSTRACT: The present work is inserted in the area of Chemical Vapor Deposition of Diamond thin and freestanding films. The CVD diamond deposition on steel substrates is still a great challenge to overcome. Iron-like materials present negative effects for the CVD diamond growth process, as catalytic effects in the preferential nucleation of the graphitic phase and high solubility of carbon atoms at typical diamond deposition temperatures. Besides that, the large differences between the thermal expansion coefficients generate large stresses in the interface between the steel substrate and the diamond film. In this work some methods of preparation of the interface between the diamond film and the steel substrate are developed by the process of thermodiffusion in molten salts. The objective is the formation of a more adapted interface for diamond growth, through the creation of intermediary films. Due to the favorable characteristics to the CVD diamond growth, to the adherence to the substrate, to the intermediary coefficient of thermal expansion between diamond film - interface and interface - substrate, the intermediary films of vanadium carbide, molybdenum, molybdenum carbide, and iron boride were studied. Diamond growth was performed in a hot filament reactor. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and Rockwell C indentation were used to characterize the samples. The results show that the deposition of vanadium carbide (VC) and of FeB are efficient to block the diffusion of carbon and to allow the deposition of diamond of good quality, but they are inefficient in promoting the relaxation of the thermal stress. In the case of VC the limitation is the small thickness of the film and in the case of FeB the coefficient of thermal expansion is still larger than the one of steel. The molybdenum electrodeposition in molten salts was shown efficient in producing thick intermediate layers, with intermediate thermal expansion coefficient, but it didn't produce appropriate interfaces with the steel substrate. The Fe2B layer was shown efficient in the relaxation of the thermal stress, allowing the obtaining of relatively adherent diamond films, but the crystalline quality of the diamond was low, indicating that the blockage of the carbon diffusion was just partial. Alternatives of multiple layers with Fe2B and FeB or Fe2B and VC were tested with the intention of to increase the blockage of the diffusion of carbon and to take advantage of the relaxation of the thermal stress promoted by Fe2B. In the first case the high coefficient of thermal expansion of FeB was shown preponderant. In the second case it was not possible to obtain the couple layer, because the layer of Fe2B disappeared during the process of VC deposition. Finally, a method of relaxation of stress was tested through the roughening of the surface by laser, comparing the intermediate films of FeB and VC. The stress relaxation was efficient with the VC film, but it was very pour with the FeB film, showing that the high thermal expansion coefficient of this last one impedes its efficient use. This group of experiments shows a lot of progress in obtaining adherent diamond films on steel substrates, but a definitive solution was not obtained yet.
